USS Deimos Deck 7 Main Engineering
Now that they were underway, Anahera walked into Main Engineering. Looking around she could recognise certain systems, but being a Steamrunner class, it was quite a different arrangement from most Starfleet vessels. Spying the Cheif Engineer's Office, she headed in that direction.
As Main Engineering was located abaft end of the Deimos, Carter was not accustomed to many visits from Command Staff. The Main Bridge was a few minutes from his location. The USS Deimos was an interesting vessel to serve as Main Engineer with a unique set of characteristics in it's propulsion set up, allowing Carter to remain busy for years. The vessel was often referred to as 'finicky' at best of times within Starfleet engineer circles, yet finicky just meant more methods for him to show off his skills.
The sound of the warp core pulsing in the back ground accompanied the light blue flashing reflection on the LCAR panels.
Carter was busy overseeing the core reaction and distribution networks throughout the plasma conductors to the rest of the nacelles and deflector systems. He had already two assistant engineers Jones and Williams working in the main Jeffries tubes re-working the set protocols that the Starbase had set in the last dry docking, re-working them to Carter's specifications.
Turning and looking as the Commander had entered Carter greeted "Commander. Lt. Vaughan." He set down one of the three PADDs that were near his work station. "Pleasure to meet you."
"You too, Mr Vaughan. So what do you think of the Deimos?"
Parker led the Captain along with him to the Engineering Office. Once in the Office Parker stood by the replicator and had two glasses of soft whiskey on rocks. Taking a drink sitting behind the desk and having handed the Captain her's... Parker had a sip and then looked around. "As Mansfield said 'All I ask is for a tall ship and a star to steer her by." He smiled.
"Captain, Pardon me for saying, but you are pretty young... for a Captain are you not?" He asked.
Ana accepted the drink. "Budʼmo." she said before taking a sip. She smiled. "Looks can be deceptive, Mr Vaughan." She told him.
Carter watched the Captain not knowing that Chernova was an El Aurian half Human. Not having the access from the Deimos personnel files, his comments clearly were ignorant underneath. "I thought you would like to know that I am 87% finished re-working the Deimos anodyne systems for the port nacelles. I could have kept them at starfleet stock levels.." He shook his head looking around the office. "But you want this baby at high power, high efficiency!"
"I'm happy to hear that, I've found that Shipyard engineers tend to be a little timid and err on the side of caution, normally due to the lack of practical starship experience.
"What made you want to be a Captain?" Carter took another sip from his drink and rolled the ice. He always was interested in knowing about his Commanding Officers.
"Well, I enjoyed captaining freighters, when I was younger, so when I was offered command of a Starfleet vessel, I jumped at the chance." Ana said.
"That takes a lot of guts... Takes a lot of chutzpah." Carter viewed Captain Chernova now as a strong fighter. He had already sensed prior that she was a strong woman, but "Captain of a freighter you have to deal with a lot of crap, if I may speak bluntly Captain."
"It takes 'smilyvist i durist', as my father would say. Boldness and stupidity. I like to think luck, ability and perseverance play a part too. As for speaking bluntly, I'd prefer you did." Ana said finishing her drink and ordering another.
Carter nodded at Captain Chernova.
"What ancestry are you?" Parker furrowed his brow not recognizing that language, however it sounding somewhat familiar in his alien languages classes back in fleet days. Stealing a glance at slight amber liquid liquor Carter had another glass this time sitting at the side of the Engineering office window ledge not having such a large desk in the way.
"Well my father was Ukrainan, of Russia extraction hence Chernov, the masculine of my last name. He was a structural engineer by trade. My mother is El-Aurian, though she was posing as a human when she met my father. It is her I have to thank for my youthful looks, would you believe I'm almost 230 years old?"
Carter let the replicated whiskey in his mouth already soothing burned when he coughed up in surprise. "Your shitting me?" He looked at Chernova walking up closer to her face. He knew El-Aurians were naturally long living and youthful but in these parts 230 years was still rare.
"Your Mother, she is still alive? How old is she now?"
"Yes she is and as far as her age is concerned, lets just say, its between 700 and 750. She's a bit cagey about the exact date. Actors are often that way, or so I'm told."
Carter nodded his head "I am sure she is very proud of you."
