“Commander Chernova, the Admiral will see you now.” Deputy Chief Rothman’s told her.
Ana thanked the woman and entered office.
“Commander Chernova, good to meet you, Admiral Toddman talks about you often. Mostly prefixed by ‘that damn Chernova woman’. Anyone who can get him in such a state, I just had to meet.” Rothman said with a large smile and a hearty laugh.
“So this is be a social visit?” Ana asked.
“I’m afraid not. More’s the pity. Do you remember that Preserver artifact, you ‘obtained’ from that Al-Shadah fellow?”
“Yes, what of it?” She inquired not bothering to ask how he knew about it.
“Well, those things can be quite handy, and between you and me, we need it. We’ve taken quite a hammering in the last 20 years and it make just contain data that could give us an edge.”
“So you want me to retrieve it. Well it’s in a pretty lawless sector of space.”
“I anticipate that, but this has to be hush hush, so I can’t provide you with a Starfleet vessel with a crew and Marines. What I can give you is a refitted civilian shuttle and two specialist crew members, one which you know and the other which you’ll have to recruit yourself.” He took two PADDs from his desk and handed them to her. “These are their service records, I’m sure both will be quite useful in your mission.”
Skimming the PADDs. “Chief Jol is my sister and this other woman isn’t even Starfleet anymore.”
“Yes, your sister is on personal leave and Miss Solari, who among other things, will be serving as your guide, just happens to be on a backwater planet in the very sector you’ll entering. Any questions?”
“No, sir.” She knew he wasn't going to tell her everything, less chance of it getting back to him that way.
“In that case try not to get yourself or your team get captured, because they’ll be no rescue. In fact as soon as you leave this room, this meeting will never have occurred. Good luck.”
“Thank you, sir.”
“You’re most welcome.” He said with a smile. “Now get out of my office.

After her shuttle landed, Ana made her way though the spaceport and headed to a small restaurant. The place wasn’t much from the outside, there was a faded sign that said ‘Joe’s Cafe’ and some alien writing above the door.
Walking through the door, she was surprise at how clean, cozy and inviting the place was. There were only ten tables, most of which were empty, but the pleasant aroma of cooked food had her salivating before she reached the counter.
The owner, a green tentacled humanoid, a species she’d never seen before, welcomed her in broken Fed standard. “Food you want, what I get you?”
“What are the specials?” Ana asked.
“All is special, is good food. You seat take, I bring food.” He said and head back to the Kitchen.
Meanwhile Mars was making the final touches to a sugo di tonno when the waiter/owner of the joint returned. "For you!" He said. Mars looked up in surprise. "What?"
"Someone like you?" He said as he nodded to the room. "Human"
She looked out the window and saw indeed a human. Or a species that looked human. Something that was very rare in these regions of space. She left the kitchen and headed for the woman's table. Grabbing a chair and turning it, she sat down backwards on it. "Ok, spill, why are you here? I thought Starfleet didn't want anything to do with me anymore?"
“What makes you think I’m from Starfleet?” Ana asked her.
"You’re human, we haven't seen a human here in like forever. At least, not since I've been here." Mars said with an obvious Roman accent.
“Okay, you’re half right, I’m Starfleet, but I’m not human, not entirely anyway.” Ana told her, her own Ukrainian accent evident in her speech. “Let’s just say I have use of your skills, and I don’t mean with a spatula.”
"Starfleet made it very clear that they don't want a criminal like me."
“Things change. With the power vested in me by Starfleet Command, I hereby temporarily reinstate to Starfleet as an Ensign, with all the rights and privileges of that rank. Welcome back Ensign Solari.”
Mars stared at the woman in front of her. "You're nuts" When the woman didn't seem to be joking she continued. "I'm sorry. but who exactly are you?" She asked when she realized the woman knew about her, but she knew almost nothing about the woman. "And what are you doing here?"
“The name’s Commander Anahera Chernova, I’m looking for something I hid 25 years ago and you’re going to help me find it.”
"Really." Mars said. "Keep talking"
“Well I’d just fled Occupied Bajor and I had the misfortune to run across some Orion Pirates. I was able to seduce the captain, while my ‘sister’ sabotaged the engines. In the resulting we were able to escape, but not before I took a souvenir which I buried on an uninhabited planetoid, before taking my ‘sister’ to safety on Earth and turning myself over to Starfleet Security. Now Starfleet Intelligence want us to go and retrieve it.” Ana explained.
She shook her head. And they had fired her.... "But why me? I'm sure Starfleet has a thousand or more qualified officers to help you." Mars said, really not grasping why this woman, this officer, needed her help.
“This is a Black Op, off the books, we’re expendable. If we screw up, they can say it was a group of rogue officers returning to their criminal ways.” Ana replied.
"Well, that explains a lot." Mars said. "So, when do we leave?"
“ASAP, I have a shuttle waiting in the spacedock.”
"Let me get my things" It's not that she has much stuff to pack. She was living out of her bag even since she left Earth when she was 18. Even though she liked her job here, she wouldn't mind leaving this godforsaken place.
“Okay.” Ana said. Then taking a civilian style communicator from her jacket pocket, talking into she said.”Reena get the shuttle ready for launch, we’re on our way.”
