ON: James and Henry couldn't help but wonder how long the shrinks would continue to evaluate their condition. They had lost everything when the Liberator suffered its sudden decompression. Every single corridor and room on that ship had suddenly decompressed, as though a tremendous explosion had ripped through her. Fortunately, alarms had begun sounding when the first compartment, Engineering, decompressed. The order to abandon ship still rang loud in their ears, even now, two months after the unfortunate mishap. After being rescued, they had not been provided any new uniforms or civilian attire. Wearing their burned and tattered clothing, they had been returned to Earth under armed escort.
Upon arriving on Earth, Starfleet Intelligence had debriefed them very thoroughly. It had felt like Intelligence suspected them of being terrorists given how brutally they had been interrogated. Eventually James and Henry had gotten smart enough to finally take a stand with Intelligence.
"Unless you plan on providing us our legally required and authorized representation through either the Judge Advocate General Corps or our own civilian attorney, we will exercise our right to remain silent under Federation Law," said James as he looked the interrogator in the eyes. It had been a week and a half and no progress had seemed to be made towards their release from captivity.
"Actually, Lieutenant, you don't have any rights under Federation Law, given that you were on a ship conducting a classified mission," stated the interrogator, a smart-ass man wearing the rank of a Commander.
"Really, Commander?" asked James.
"That is correct, Lieutenant," replied the Commander.
"In accordance with Federation Law and in accordance with the Articles of Federation, I hereby demand to speak with the President of the United Federation of Planets. If you have any doubt that he knows me personally, you may send him the regards of James Stewart IV and the regards of the entire Stewart Family of Edinburgh, Scotland," he stated very slowly and very carefully as he stared at the glass wall which clearly, yet invisibly, concealed the Commander's superiors. "On a side note, you can also advise him that these actions taken against the son of a Federation Diplomat and grandson of a former Federation Diplomat, who additionally has committed no crime, will have severe legal consequences for the Federation Council as well as Starfleet," he said furiously. "Also, you will immediately contact my attorney, advise him that you are holding us, where you are holding us, as well as what you are charging us with. His name is James Edward Stewart II. Let's see how the former Ambassador, James Edward Stewart II, Esquire, reacts to his grandson being held without charges and without proper procedural rights being observed."
"Lieutenant, that is quite enough," said the Commander as a red light glowed above the glass he had stared at moments ago.
Two hours later, the Commander had returned. "After further research, Lieutenant, your family connections as well as your own personal connections have been confirmed, as have your legal assertions. You might make a good lawyer for yourself someday. We are releasing you. This is not a full release, it is a provisional release. If any incident arises which we believe can be reasonably tied to you, you will be brought back into custody," he stated very cautiously.
"Not without the President, my grandfather, my father, and a Judge Advocate General present, I won't," stated James very cockily. "In fact, you will find within the next few hours, that a legal restriction against you having any involvement with me will be imposed by the Federation Council and signed by the Federation President," he added with a smirk on his face. "Let's see you try breaking through government red tape unobserved without loosing all support and funding."
"Lieutenant, you and your husband should leave immediately before you say the wrong thing and end up locked up permanently," said the Commander.
"Sure," said James as Henry stood up to join him in leaving.
The following week, James and Henry were brought in front of Federation Security for an interview. Apparently word had traveled fast among those circles that were going to have to interview them because his attorney, his grandfather, and the President of the Federation were already there waiting for their arrival.
The President spoke first. "James, Henry, it is a pleasure to see both of you again. You have my assurances that this will be a routine round of questions just to help the Federation clear up the events that occurred around the Liberator. Those involved in your previous interrogation were smart enough to let us know what they had done, and proper actions regarding the matter are being taken. You have my assurances that I will be here to observe for the duration of this interview. Your grandfather is here as your lead legal counsel as well as to explain anything that needs explaining. Your attorney will be here as co-counsel. Any concerns raised by either of them will be addressed. As the son and grandson of a diplomat, I am required to inform you that you have no diplomatic immunity, even they do not have diplomatic immunity in Federation proceedings, only in foreign ones. That said, they do have the necessary security clearances to know anything that you may know about the incidents. The Federation Council also has an observer present. That observer will also be able to raise any concerns that she may feel need to be raised. The primary concern of this matter is to determine what you know, how much of it is classified, and how much of it is not classified. Our job is to inform you of what you may discuss and what you may not discuss, in order to ensure that you don't make any slips when interacting with medical personnel or future crew mates," he explained.
"Understood, Mr. President," said James.
"Shall we proceed?" asked the civilian investigator.
"By all means, sir," said James.
"What do you know of the incidents surrounding the events of the Hadleigh?" asked the investigator.
"Only that we were to take aboard a group of Romulans who would supervise our attempt to render humanitarian assistance to certain restricted areas of Romulan space," said James.
"Were you aware of any Tal-Shiar presence on board the Hadleigh during your time assigned to it?"
"No. To the best of my knowledge there were no Tal-Shiar members on board the Hadleigh nor among the group of Romulans who boarded the Liberator to supervise its involvement during the rescue of the Hadleigh," replied James.
"Were you privy to what the Liberator was supposed to be doing in Romulan space?"
"I was aware that the Liberator was assigned to find and rescue the Hadleigh. They also brought radiation drugs on board in order to assist me in treating the crew of the Hadleigh as well as our Romulan guests. Additionally, the Liberator had planned on investigating a suspected Scimitar class ship. The presence of part of the Romulan contingent on board the Liberator changed our plans and the Commanding Officer cancelled the search for the Scimitar. He additionally specified that any information concerning the Scimitar or its suspected presence was classified at the highest levels of Starfleet," said James.
"Lieutenant, you are correct, that information is and was classified at the highest levels of Starfleet and at the highest clearances. Generally, you wouldn't have access to that information, however, due to the nature of the entire mission and your clearances, you were granted a provisional clearance to know that information which you were deemed as needing to know. Do you know what caused the explosive decompression of every deck and every section of the Liberator?" said the investigator.
"No. I have no idea what caused the explosion. If I absolutely had to guess, I would guess that either we suffered a warp core breach, which would explain the decompression of Engineering first, or someone, possibly a Tal-Shiar agent or a Tal-Shiar double agent within Starfleet Intelligence planted a device that sabotaged the ship," said James. "That is just a random guess, I have no knowledge of whether there is any truth to it or not."
"Lieutenant, any speculation regarding the Liberator would be unwise. If and when the cause is identified, it will be classified the same as the mission and the Scimitar. Additionally, any reference at all to the Liberator being in Romulan space is absolutely classified. All the news knows is that the Liberator temporarily entered Romulan space on a diplomatic mission authorized by the Interim Senate. That is the declassified version, that is the only version. The devastating accident is currently presumed to be due to a technical issue that is being investigated and resolved in all future members of that ship class," stated the investigator. "Do you understand what you have been told?"
"Yes," replied James.
"The records of this conversation will additionally be classified. The only persons with access to this interview will be the Command Council of Starfleet Command, the senior personnel at Starfleet Intelligence, the Federation Council, and obviously the Federation President, who was nice enough to be here today," said the investigator.
"Understood. Thank you very much for your time," replied James. "Are we free to go now?"
"You are," said the investigator.
A couple days later, James and Henry were disturbed again. "Sir, you need to report to Starfleet Medical immediately. You and your husband will be subject to psychological evaluation and treatment until such a time as any post-traumatic distress syndrome can be properly rehabilitated," stated the young Ensign standing at the door of their castle.
"Ensign, you have about twenty seconds to get the fuck off of my doorstep and leave me alone," said James. "I have been interrogated by two bodies already. It is time to leave I, and my husband, in peace so that we can recover on our own unless or until we feel that psychological help is needed," he said boldly.
"Sir, I'm not authorized to do that. I need you to accompany me to Starfleet Medical," repeated the Ensign.
"Ensign, unless or until you have a signed affidavit by a Medical Professional, specifically a Starfleet Medical Officer, specifying that I and my husband are unfit to deal with our situation on our own, you will leave here and not return," he stated.
"Sir, I can do you one better," said the Ensign. "Read this PADD," he ordered.
"Lieutenant James Edward Stewart IV and his husband Henry Michael Windsor-Stewart are hereby ordered to report to Starfleet Medical for immediate and full psychological evaluation and treatment on the basis that they are believed to be suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder as a result of the events surrounding the USS Hadleigh and the USS Liberator. Signed Admiral Charles Manson, Senior," read James.
"Computer, transmit the following message to Starfleet Medical and Starfleet Command on all available frequencies. Copy transmission to the Federation Council, the President of the United Federation of Planets, Ambassador James Edward Stewart III, and Retired Ambassador James Edward Stewart II. Begin recording and transmission. Until there are medical records indicating that Lieutenant James Edward Stewart IV and Henry Michael Windsor-Stewart are suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, both subjects hereby refuse to comply with any orders to undergo psychological evaluation and treatment. In accordance with Starfleet Regulations, currently available medical records must include psychological evaluations and such evaluations must indicate such a disorder. Because present medical records and psychological examinations present no evidence of such a disorder, and because the annual physical is presently not due and has only recently been performed, such orders are unlawful and will not be followed. Should the Admiralty choose to contest this order, the resignation of Lieutenant Stewart will be tendered as has presently been drafted and the resignation of Mr. Windsor-Stewart from the Civilian Corps will also be tendered as has presently been drafted. Computer transmit message with two attached files. File number one is to be Stewart 75929 and Windsor-Stewart 75929," he stated.
"Inbound communication from Starfleet Command and Starfleet Medical," said the computer.
"Computer, run message," said James.
"In accordance with medical examination conducted on Lieutenant James Edward Stewart IV and Mr. Henry Michael Windsor-Stewart upon transfer from Escape Pod Gamma Epsilon 5 to USS Denmark, both resignations are hereby refused and the order to attend psychological evaluation and treatment is hereby reaffirmed," came the voice of Admiral Manson.
"And there you have it, Henry. Starfleet once again feels that it can dictate to people when they can and cannot become civilians," said James. "Fine, Ensign. Escort us to Starfleet Medical. Actually, no. Escort us to Admiral Manson," he stated. "Computer, initiate full relay to Ambassador Stewart and Retired Ambassador Stewart indicating that they should meet us in the office of Admiral Manson," he further commanded.
The computer beeped as the automated message was transmitted. As they left, James quickly punched a button outside the door of the castle. The castle was now in a total lockdown. There was no possible override to enter without using a personally programmed command code.
A short time later, they arrived in the officer of Admiral Manson, where they found both of the elder Stewart family members present.
"Admiral, due to the potentially forged nature of that medical record, I hereby demand enforcement of our right to be seen by a civilian doctor," stated James.
"First and foremost, Lieutenant, you don't make demands here," stated Manson. "Second of all," he added, "That right only applies to civilians. As you are both members of Starfleet, that right does not apply," he added.
"Actually, Admiral, my grandson is correct. Under Federation Law and Starfleet Regulations, there is no clause specifying that it only applies to civilians, therefore that right, in fact, does exist to both of them," said James II.
"Ambassador, I have no intention of wasting valuable time and resources on this matter," stated the Admiral. "We have a ship that we need them to report to as soon as they are able. This evaluation will determine fitness for duty, the treatments for any psychological conditions will help to get them fit for duty, and a final evaluation that declares them fit for duty will get them to their new posting," he said. "It is imperative and urgent, especially as undermanned as Starfleet is, that we get them back on the active duty roster as soon as possible."
"Admiral, if you wish to circumvent legally required procedures, I'll be damned if I'll let it be my son," said James III.
"Dad, Grandpa, both of you need to stop and let me speak," said James.
"Fine. Son, what do you want to do?" asked James III.
"Dad, they need me and they need these tests in order to get me where they need me, I'll do it," said James carefully.
"I thought you might agree with me," said Manson.
"Thank you for the explanation, Admiral," said James.
"Don't mention it," said the Admiral.
Two weeks later, James and Henry were finally released from Starfleet Medical with a clean bill of health. A short time later, they were on a shuttle bound for the USS Deimos. Upon docking with the Deimos, the computer promptly guided them and a couple of crates to their quarters. Upon entering and seeing how small and cramped their quarters were, they were quite glad that they hadn't had all of their personal belongings from the Liberator with them. It was a clean, if not crowded, start, but it would be a good and fruitful start for both of them.
