The Starfleet Engineering Officer formerly known as "Two-of-Two" was retrieved from Borg Reconnaissance Cube Sierra-42 by a Starfleet exploratory vessel (ooc: leaving the exact ship's name open in case Duet's history could be attached to a previous storyline or ship). The cube was discovered derelict and adrift following a sudden gravametric wave that surged its systems and cut it off from the Collective. Most of the cube's complement of drones perished in the surge and only a small handful of those that survived could be rescued. Of those, only three were successfully liberated.
Starfleet MACOs discovered Two-of-two bound within a Borg Incubation Chamber. Her body only recently grown to physical maturity, she was nearly entirely organic and of the few implants that had been grafted to her, none of her critical organs, such as brain, heart or lungs, had been replaced yet. The surge fried her ocular implants and cybernetic limbs, and damaged a cortical nodule attached to the base of her skull, but the rest of her organic body survived in stasis within the chamber until recovered by Starfleet.
With so little of her body having been replaced by borg implants and no signs of ever being connected to the Collective, it was a relatively easy process to salvage ("liberate" is the politically correct term) her organic body and free her mind as an individual being.
With nowhere else to go, and feeling an obligation to her "liberators", Two-of-two enrolled in Starfleet Academy to pursue a career in starship engineering.

Two-of-two may have enrolled in Starfleet Academy, but it was "Duet" who graduated. The former drone accepted the new name gifted to her by her Cadet Squad. She proved to be adept in the sciences, and excelled in mechanics, but found the arts beyond her grasp. She placed sixth in her class at the School of Engineering -- respectable, if unremarkable.
